In the late 1960s Porsche was firing on all cylinders, enjoying the spoils from their engineering prowess that resulted in many wins for their 906, 907, and 910 platforms. It was then announced that the FIA had a rule change for Group 6 prototype sports cars that limited engine size to 3,000cc, similar to Formula 1 at the time. Previously, the Porsche 907 only had a 2.2L flat eight engine so Porsche decided it was high time to enlarge the air-cooled 8 cylinder to the maximum allowed size, a first for Porsche. In 1969 more rule changes ensued, that favored open cars over coupes, and Porsche followed with the 1969 Porsche 908/02, a spyder variant of the 908 and one of the most beautiful Porsche race cars ever built.

For 1969, Porsche built 22 updated and lightened 908s in spyder form, which were dubbed 908/02. Incredibly competitive on the race track, and at the time were the most formidable race car Porsche had built yet, the 908/02 struck fear into competitors constantly. With a sophisticated and rigid tubular chassis, and fitted with a lightweight fiberglass body tipping the scales at just around 28.6lbs, the 908/02s were a featherweight 1,323lbs. Propelled by a simplified but extremely reliable 2,997cc air-cooled flat 8 engine producing 350 horsepower, it was no wonder why they would go on to become one of Porsche’s most successful racers. They were first entered by the Porsche Werks team, raced a few times to great success, and then recommissioned and sold to a successful privateer team with a history with Porsche race cars.

908/02.010 was built reportedly by Porsche on April 8th, 1969 and started as a factory race car and entered into three races. These races included Brands Hatch, Targa Florio, and the Nurburgring 1000km. With three races remaining in the 1969 FIA season, Porsche had already secured the World Sportscar Championship after the Nurburgring 1000KM. This had 908/02.010 get sent back to Porsche to be recommissioned and given a fresh flat 8 engine.

After its Porsche recommissioning process, 908/02.010 was subsequently sold by Porsche’s racing department in June of 1969 to Richard Brostrom, an experienced Swedish racer living in Lausanne, Switzerland. He found success in entering the car for the remainder of the 1969 season and through July of 1970, first entering under the name of “Sports Cars of Switzerland” and in 1970 under the name of “Sports Cars Brostrom”. At this time the car’s livery had been changed to white with yellow and blue stripes. In 1969 Brostrom had Masten Gregory, a top American racer, race in the 908/02 and in 1970 had the legendary Pedro Rodriguez pilot the car.

In late 1970, Richard Brostrom sold 908/02.010 to one of the best-known and most successful Porsche privateer racers of all time, Andre Wicky, also located in Lausanne, Switzerland. An avid 24 Hours of Le Mans entrant, 908/02.010 saw itself entered multiple times into the legendary race. Under Wicky the livery changed several times on the 908/02, from white with red stripes, white with a red nose, and then yellow as of 1972. Wicky remained the most active with the 908/02, entering it into 22 events during his stewardship.

It was reported that Wicky remained the caretaker of this 908/02 until around 1981, when it was sold to Albert Eggs in Sierre, Switzerland. Shortly after acquiring it, Eggs sent the 908/02 back to Porsche for recommissioning which by this time had been fitted with a 908/03 engine. The 908/03 type engine case is the correct specification for a Porsche 908/02.

In 1989 Eggs sold the 908/02 to Said Marouf in La Jolla, California, joining his collection of extraordinary cars that included an Alfa Romeo TZ2. Maintained by Rob Shanahan at the time and was run in the Monterey Historics in the 1990s. In 1997, the car was offered for sale in La Jolla and was subsequently purchased by David Scaife in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania where it was displayed in his personal museum during the early 2000s. In 2005 the 908/02 was acquired by Paul Osbourne, at which point the car had been restored by Lazante of the UK back to the original configuration of which Wicky raced the car.

In 2011 the Porsche was acquired by automotive collector and businessperson, Richard Griot of Griot’s Garage. An avid collector and racer in his own right, Griot wanted to return the 908/02 back to its original Werks body style and configuration. Griot engaged J&L Fabricating to manage a new restoration of the car, including the new body and chassis work completed by Porsche experts Gunnar Racing of West Palm Beach, Florida. Engine experts Jerry Woods Enterprises was charged with rebuilding the 3.0L flat 8 engine. Once completed, Griot brought the car to the 2015 and 2018 Porsche Rennsport Reunion, including other Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion events. Finally, after 11 years of enjoyment, Griot decided to let the next caretaker of the 908/02 find the car, and in 2022 it was sold to noted collector and Instagram celebrity Jas Dhillon of Nashville, Tennessee, and shortly after found a new owner also based in Nashville. In 2025, the 908/02 was shown prominently at The Amelia Concours at Amelia Island, Florida.

Upon arriving at Canepa, it was a clear indication that the 908/02 was a treasured race car. Beautiful in design, and its previous caretakers took exceptional care of the car indicated by its condition. With a clear and continuous history, 908/02.010 is quite possibly one of the finest in existence. Still fitted with its reportedly original transaxle #020 and period correct 3.0L flat 8 engine #90803009, it is a racecar that is ready to race as well as ready to present at any concours show. Eligible for racing events worldwide through its FIA documentation, this 908/02 represents a clear period of Porsche dominance of the period when racecars are considered timeless works of art.
