Next Generation Jury in ICONS 2024
Hasso Plattner said: “I believe that whoever is successful should help ensure that the next generation can be successful, too.”
The Co-Founder of SAP said it right. ICONS Mallorca is organising an international concours of elegance – a competition of mostly unique cars – in an unbeatable surrounding following a long tradition our concours-venues. The first concours at the Villa d Este: 1929. The Parisian Concours d’Élégance in Auteuil 1929 as well or Pebble Beach in California in 1950 – they all are the famous origins of concours-competitions. Cars of today are history tomorrow.
To carry the enthusiasm to a younger – a new – generation is the idea behind the “Next Generation”-Jury. The honourable members of this jury-group will lay the foundation to new and fresh concours-standards of “how the untainted eyes” of passionate car-lovers see the selected cars in the concours-classes.
The “Next Generation” – Judges in the ICONS Mallorca 2024 are
Chiara Aichele
Laura Burstein
Anna-Louise Felstead
Jasper C. Walther
Katharina Gassmann
Rosemarijn Atalante Vera Veenenbos
Betim Lushtaku
They will be working together with Frederik Burchardt and Michael Gross as well as with Victor Roberto Muller and Urs P. Ramseier. Watch out for the next generation – an important step in “our concours world”.
Concours Highlight: Isotta Fraschini (Tipo A8) from 1928 Castagna
In the class: ‘Pure Grace & Style’ – Pre War Luxury Cars, the ICONS present a truly iconic automobile. Unique in the world in this colour combination and with an eventful history.
The mighty 8-cylinder Isotta-Fraschini, which was custom-bodied at Castagna in Milan in 1928, exudes the opulent elegance of the Great Gatsby era and the Roaring Twenties.
In 1898, the lawyer Cesare Isotta and the engineer Vincenzo Fraschini founded a joint company for the import and sale of engines and automobiles in Milan.
In 1900, they founded the Società Milanese d’Automobili Isotta, Fraschini & C. in the same city. In 1904, the company was renamed Fabbrica Automobili Isotta Fraschini.
The upswing began with the appointment of designer Giustino Cattaneo. He was responsible for vehicle development from 1905 to 1933. In 1906, the company produced 300 vehicles, putting it in second place among Italian car manufacturers behind Fiat. By 1914, over 50 different types of car were on offer – during the First World War, the company also began to manufacture aircraft engines. 1919 saw the transition to a one-model policy in car production until the Great Depression. From this time onwards, aircraft engine construction was more lucrative than car production, which was even temporarily discontinued in 1935.
Castagna in Milan produced a customised body in the classic coachbuilding style. All of the equipment details were customised to customer specifications. The highest level of craftsmanship, which is still extremely fascinating today.
The Isotta-Fraschini in ‘The Grand’ at the ICONS has another special feature in its ‘CV’ – in the 1979 James Bond 007 film ‘Moonraker’ with Roger Moore, it is the car of the Bond villain Sir Hugo Drax (played by Michael Lonsdale). ‘1 Drax’ is coming to ICONS 2024 and will also be a crowd-puller on Public Day in Port Andratx. So to speak: 1-Drax in Andratx.
ICONS Mallorca is looking forward to this special vehicle. It is one of 36 selected Concours vehicles in the Concours ‘The Grand’.
Official ICONS 2024 Hotel – The Castillo Hotel Son Vida
There is only one place in Palma which offers such a rich and incomparable history among all the top hotels on the island.
Belonging to the Five-Star Alliance of the world´s best hotels and the Luxury Hotel Collection the “Castillo Hotel Son Vida” breathes the grandezza of long-forgotten times. The historic building from the 13th century presents itself to hotel guests in a truly impressive way as soon as they enter.
The current estate rises on the former lands of one of the most important estates in the city of Palma, Son Vida, which was owned by the Vida, Desmàs and Trullols families. The origins of the estate date back to the 13th century and over time the property has passed to new owners through inheritance and redistribution of the land.
One of the most significant changes took place at the beginning of the 20th century with the construction of a villa modelled on the neo-Gothic Castell de Peralada (Girona) with a tower that still impressively welcomes guests. This property was a gift from Fernando Truyols y Despuig to his wife Magdalena Villalonga and the building and the associated land remained in her possession until it was sold in the 1950s. There is a big fine art collection from this time, still belonging to the Son Vida Hotel.
Today after just six steps, the entrance leads directly into the centuries-old part of the Castillo – the part that illustrious and prominent people have probably passed through a thousand times in its history. On June 23, 1961, the castle opened its doors as a luxury hotel – the guest book at Son Vida is exorbitantly opulent.
King Edward VII, known for his commitment to foreign policy, came to Mallorca as early as 1905 and left his mark on the hotel’s history. Dictator Francisco Franco (1947) and Prince Rainier (1960), who came to visit the Son Vida construction site at the time, were followed by major international celebrities. And the following year, when Mallorcan winemaker José Luis Ferrer pompously opened the hotel, they also made an appearance on the island. Other celebrities, such as ship owner Onassis and Maria Callas, Grace Kelly, Anthony Quinn, attended a subsequent summer party organised by the Prince of Monaco. They all must have enjoyed the view of the city of Palma at night, when the lights illuminated the place and the yachts. It was the time of the first modern hotels and the tourist boom on Playa de Palma.
In 1995, the hotel was purchased by the Schorghuber Group and renamed Castillo Hotel Son Vida. The hotel underwent a full renovation in 2005. Today, Castillo Hotel Son Vida draws influential guests from all over the world. Son Vida is considered the most exclusive and prestigious residential area on the island. What was once considered one of the most important estates in medieval Palma is now a town that is a symbol of a luxury residential area in Mallorca. This very special place is the official hotel für participants and guest in the ICONS Mallorca 2024. Find out more
