1972 Ferrari 365 GTC/4 “Targa by Claudio Zampolli”, S/N 15347, Black with cognac leather. 4.4 Liter V12 with 6 Weber carburetors and 5 speed manual transmission. Borrani wire wheels. Delivered new to William Harrah’s west coast Ferrari distributorship, Modern Classic Motors in September, 1972. It was originally Arancio Vaguely (orange) with tan leather. Sold to a gentleman in Los Angeles.

Years later, in the 80’s, famed supercar builder (Cizeta V16T) and Lamborghini engineer Claudio Zampolli customized 15347 in true 1980’s style. The obvious: This C/4 is now a Targa. The targa conversion is extensive. The top fits like a 911 Targa, tight and latches easily and direct. The headliner is black, tufted Alcantara. The targa top fits inside the trunk on fabricated mounts and has a tonneau that snaps in place for protection. The next custom feature: The handmade rear integrated steel spoiler. Designed by Zampolli, it blends into Pininfarina’s coachwork organically and has a proud, aggressive look.

Continuing with the exterior modifications: To accentuate the new spoiler, the rear-end was redesigned using 4 308 taillights in place of the six small C/4 lights and the rear bumper redesigned to continue its new aggressive bum. The front end lost its pop-up headlights in favor of handmade air-intakes to feed the V12 more air and then, “way ahead of the time”, cutting edge projector style headlights located in the lower grille.

The sides of the car gained enameled Scuderia shields, properly recessed into the sheetmetal like the Ferrari factory still does today, Vitaloni side-view mirrors and below the shields, handmade gilled fender vents to let the V12 cool more efficiently. Inside the car, a completely new leather and Alcantara interior in cognac and black. Smartly, the rear seats of a C/4 are almost impossible to use, so Zampolli, reconfigured the rear into a luggage shelf with a cubby storage bin underneath the deck. The gauge pack was refinished in wood style to match the wood Momo steering wheel, the heater controls deleted from the center console to tidy things up a bit and the rest of the interior was covered in black Alcantara if it wasn’t leather. According to the Massini report, in the late 80’s this one of one C/4 was grey with red and had only 17k miles on it (it is now showing ~21k).

Then 3 decades later, shown at Concorso Italiano in 2016 in its present black/cognac combo. Customizing cars peaked in the 80’s and while rare for a Ferrari, nothing was sacred and if you had imagination and money, you could do what you wanted. Copley Motorcars now are the beneficiaries of this trend these 4 decades later…they get a truly “one off” custom Ferrari, they get a glimpse into one man’s vision and most importantly, they get the story. Can’t make this stuff up. Rare, special, unbelievable and real. This 40 year old custom Ferrari can now be yours to continue the lore.

This 365 GTC/4 “Targa CZ” comes with two boxes of parts, the red hides from the early 80s, Massini report and a car cover.

Copley Motorcars was established by Stu Carpenter in 1995. Working for other luxury and sportscar dealers in Boston since 1986, Stu has gained a longterm-experience in offering exceptional products at a fair price making the acquisition of a classic and luxury car as easy and as enjoyable as possible. The team at Copley Motorcars has a particular affinity for vintage Mercedes Benz, Ferrari and Land Rover Defender but also other blue chips such as 289 Cobra, BMW Z8 and Porsche 959. Since the market for these cars is a worldwide one, Copley Motorcars ships worldwide and can easily assist with the logistical arrangements. December 2019 marked Copley’s 24th year of buying and selling sports and classics. Their showroom is located in the center of Needham, about 15 miles west of the City of Boston. Copley has an interesting, some would say eclectic, mix of classic cars always on offer and find something to love about each and every one. And because Copley Motorcars is a smallish “boutique” type dealer, their classic cars don’t necessarily run out the door. A new arrival could be there for a day, a week or even six months. That said, all of their classics are different one to the next and are being looked at throughout the USA and the world. If you see a car you like and want to buy it, please contact copleycars@gmail.com. If you see a car and want to think about it, terrific too. But please, please, please assume that someone else is looking at the very same classic you are interested in so, if it gets sold, they do their very best to find another for you.
