Porsche is no stranger to creating unique and highly collectible variants of its beloved 911 cars, often releasing them into the wild in short supply. For 1992, for the U.S. market only, Porsche released the 1992 Porsche 911 America Roadster, named after the 356 America Roadster, was a unique cabriolet that had a number of upgrades that made it stand out from more “regular” cars. Based on the 964 body with a Carrera 2 drivetrain, it was upgraded with a Turbo body, including wider front and rear fenders for a much more aggressive look. These fender flares, paired with Turbo brakes, Turbo suspension, and 17” Porsche Cup wheels, and the removal of the rear seats with a parcel shelf in its place created a limited edition 911 that was a driver-focused convertible, was only for the American market, and extremely rare with only 250 examples produced.
This 1993 Porsche 911 American Roadster, according to its original window sticker, was ordered and sold to Paul Miller Porsche of Parsippany, New Jersey. Optioned in Black with a black top, it was spec’d with a gray leather interior with black carpet, a limited slip differential, an AM/FM radio with CD player, full power seats for driver and passenger sides, supple leather seats, and deviating carpet in black. A 3.6L flat six engine with 5-speed manual transmission was standard. According to the original retail installment contract, the total MSRP was $95,595.80 on January 28th, 1993 when it was purchased by its first owner, Robert Matturo of Caldwell, New Jersey.
Over the course 23 years, the America Roadster’s caretakers took obvious care of the car, resulting in a fantastic collector-quality example that was acquired by its most recent caretaker with only 12,728 miles. This caretaker, a Porsche collector based in Austin, Texas, kept the car in his collection for almost 8 years while making sure it was always maintained properly. This included regular oil changes and brake fluid and clutch hydraulic fluid flushes, an air conditioning system evacuation and recharge, fuel pump replacement, and a battery replacement. Upon arrival at Canepa, the America Roadster had only accumulated 13,107 total miles, marking just 379 miles over almost 8 years.
Once the 911 America Roadster came through Canepa’s doors, it was immediately put through the “Canepa Difference” process. This includes a comprehensive mechanical and cosmetic inspection, to ensure that it is in the best condition. The car was immediately sent to Canepa’s detail department where the underside was cleaned by hand to reveal factory finishes in exceptional condition. The car then received a multi-stage foam pad polish of the factory black paint, enhancing the luster of the original finish. The original leather interior was given equal attention, cleaning every surface ensuring that it looked like a car that was just rolled off the showroom floor. Once completed, the America Roadster was lifted up and given a full mechanical inspection, confirming that the previous owner not only kept the car in excellent mechanical condition, but that it overall was a very healthy example of this limited edition Porsche 911.
Now available at Canepa, this one-of-250 example 911 America Roadster is a unique snapshot into Porsche’s early 1990s special builds. With its aggressive Turbo bodywork but with a sunny coastal weather top, this 911 allows you to channel some of Porsche’s best 964 bodywork styling with unlimited headroom. Being in exceptional mechanical and cosmetic condition due to its previous caretakers taking excellent care of it, this is likely one of the finest examples of the 250 America Roadsters ever produced.
