What Makes This Car So Special?
The Lotus Elite was already revolutionary with its fiberglass monocoque and Coventry Climax power. In this newsletter we put several old pictures of this model. But the Super 100? That was something else. Built for endurance racing, it came with twin Weber carburetors, a special exhaust manifold, a ZF gearbox, lightweight Borrani wheels, and a long-distance fuel tank with Monza filler cap.
In short: it was Chapman’s philosophy of “simplify, then add lightness”, sharpened for the world’s toughest tracks.
Only five Super 100s were ever made. This is the very first one.
1961: Birth of the Super 100
The Lotus Elite had stunned the world in 1957 with its radical fiberglass monocoque. Four years later, Chapman’s team unveiled the Super 100: lighter, faster, and ready to take on Le Mans. This car was the very first example.
1960s: Racing Spirit
From new, this Elite Super 100 was immersed in motorsport. It carried its owners into the heat of competition, proving that efficiency and courage could challenge giants on the track. A Lotus Elite can be seen on the racing track below.
Today: Preserved Originality
Unlike so many racers of its era, this Elite Super 100 has survived in superb, extremely original condition. Carefully maintained, a successful racing history and never forgotten, it remains one of the most authentic survivors of its breed.
