Behind the Garage Doors: Ben Bertucci On One of One

Interview by Horst A. Friedrichs: Ben Bertucci on One of One (2025 Documentary)

Ben, you started your career as a still photographer. How did you transition from photography to directing a full-length feature like One of One?

Photography captures moments, but I wanted to explore the human experience over time. That desire to tell richer stories naturally led me to directing.

Bertucci’s career as a still photographer gave him a sharp eye for detail—but One of One allowed him to tell a full story over time, blending craftsmanship, family, and passion.

When did you realize this was a feature-length story?

I interviewed Masao Naito, the patriarch, for a few hours in Japanese. I didn’t speak the language, so I had a translator review the footage. Two weeks later, I started reading the translation, and by page two, I realized—this story is rich, multi-layered, and profoundly human. That’s when it became clear this had to be a feature.

It was a moment of clarity. Masao Naito’s decades-long career, family legacy, and personal collection offered layers of narrative that could not be condensed into a short film.

How did you gain access to such a private family?

I observed, respected their hierarchy, and quietly integrated myself into their world. Over time, the camera became invisible.

Cultural sensitivity and patience were key. Bertucci’s unobtrusive style allowed the Naitos to reveal both personal and professional moments with authenticity.

Masao Naito’s personal collection is incredible, with cars like the Ferrari 250 LM and Porsche 907 K. Was he driven by investment or passion?

Passion, pure and simple. Masao repeatedly said, “I buy cars because I love them, not to sell them. Even when warned about market value, he followed his taste and instinct. That dedication created the remarkable collection we see today.

From Ferraris to Porsches, every acquisition reflects Masao’s taste, instinct, and devotion to the craft—defining the family’s global reputation.

How do the Naitos approach restoration?

Originality matters most. Some cars, like their Ferrari 206 Dino, remain completely unrestored. It’s about enjoying the car’s history, not chasing concours perfection.

Any unique techniques or routines?

There’s a deeply spiritual element to their work. Each car is treated as a sculpture, honored and restored with reverence.

The Naitos’ shop thrives on silence, focus, and ritual. The sounds of tools, passing cars, and even birdsong became part of the meditative atmosphere Bertucci captured on film.

Was there a single car that epitomized the family’s work and philosophy?

The Ferrari 250 LM stands out. Masao acquired it in the 1990s through relationships abroad. Restoring it was about honoring history, not maximizing value. That car encapsulates the family’s love for these machines and their reverence for tradition.

The Ferrari 250 LM became central to the documentary, symbolizing the balance of legacy, skill, and personal passion.

How did this experience change your view of classic cars?

Immense respect. Observing the Naitos reinforced the power of passion and dedication—how a human story elevates even the most technical work.

Ben also admits a personal fascination with the Shelby Cobras—a dream that continues to inspire his storytelling.

What does the book add to the documentary?

Hundreds of photographs and unseen moments expand the story. Readers can explore the family, the workshop, and the cars in a deeper way.

Final thoughts?

Passion, craft, and integrity endure across generations. This is a story about family, legacy, and doing work with love.
