RUF Automobile is a renowned German manufacturer synonymous with high-performance sports cars and engineering excellence. Founded in 1939 by Alois Ruf Sr. in Pfaffenhausen, Germany, the company initially focused on vehicle repairs and service. It wasn’t until the 1960s, under the stewardship of Alois Ruf Jr., that RUF began to modify Porsche cars, which eventually paved the way for their entry into automobile manufacturing.

This RCT is finished in Polar Silver, which was a new Porsche silver that was introduced in the early 1990’s. The color was highly popular for its subtle hint of blue that shined when light hit it. Contrasted by a black interior and Recaro Pole Position bucket seats, it was clear that this was no ordinary Porsche. With subtle design ques such as door sill plates, a 3-spoke steering wheel, gear lever, and gauges in vintage 356 green numbers and raised limits, RUF wanted to leave their mark where it mattered most.

RUF gained prominence for its skillful enhancements to Porsche models, elevating their performance and creating bespoke vehicles tailored to discerning enthusiasts. One of their most iconic creations was the RUF CTR “Yellowbird,” unveiled in 1987. This car, based on the Porsche 911, achieved legendary status for its exceptional speed and handling, setting new benchmarks in the automotive world.

The 964 generation 911 Carrera RS would form the canvas that the RCT would be built around. This was the only RUF RCT to be built on a Carrera RS chassis. The reason for this was the additional rigidity the chassis provided.

With the unibody being completely seam-welded for additional stiffness, as well as no undercoating, an aluminum hood, thinner front and rear glass, reduced insulation, and even a lighter wiring harness, every ounce of weight was trimmed out of the car to maximize performance and handling from all aspects. With this philosophy of reduce as much weight as possible, RUF knew this was the right chassis to build off of.

The specialty RUF engine was the center of attention for this RCT. Boasting a 3.6-Liter Twin-Turbocharged Flat 6 with Bosch-Motronic Engine Management, puts 370 horsepower and 395 lb-ft of torque down to the rear wheels. Mated to a RUF designed 6-speed manual transmission, this RUF RCT was meant to be nothing less than a pure driver’s car.

This particular RCT is special, as it was featured in RUF’s RCT brochure, which is included with the vehicle. Along with that, it was featured in many magazine articles of the time (multiple original copies are also included).

According to the car’s German Fahrzeugbrief (Vehicle registration document), the car remained under RUF’s ownership from construction in 1993, until September of 1994. Then the car found its way to Heisberg, Germany, where its first private owner was currently living. The first owner had the RCT for 23 years. Service records show that this owner relied on RUF to service and maintain the vehicle, returning to Pfaffenhausen for scheduled annual maintenance over the years. The first owner would part ways with the car in March of 2017.

The car lived on in Europe for another 4 years, marking its final European annual service at Porsche Zentrum Dusseldorf in March of 2021. Later that year, this 1994 RUF RCT would be imported to North America, where it has remained.

The 1994 RUF RCT is a testament to automotive engineering and development. Building a raw and unhinged sports car from an already extremely lightweight 964 Carrera RS, defines the core roots of what RUF stands for. With a legacy rooted in passion and craftsmanship, RUF continues to shape the automotive landscape, inspiring enthusiasts worldwide with its unique blend of heritage, innovation, and driving exhilaration.
