Porsche – The Design Book

A Porsche is a Porsche is a Porsche. Why is that? »Porsche – The Design Book« delivers the answer across 400 pages – among other things with exclusive sketches and personal notes from longtime Porsche design chief Michael Mauer. The additional VIP edition, limited to 20 copies, comes in a high-quality black linen box and includes two serigraphs signed by Michael Mauer.

The most important tool for designers? It’s still the pencil. It allows ideas to be visualised spontaneously, immediately and quickly.

That’s why most designs at Porsche are first created on paper. These are small works of art that, as the process continues, are transformed into moving works of art with the help of innovative software and elaborate clay models. We show you how this works at Porsche in “Porsche – The Design Book” – now available as limited VIP edition.

The silhouette, with its rearward-sloping flyline, is a defining feature of the 911. But right from the start, the powerful shoulders, the raised wings and the sculpted surfaces have also characterised the model range – something that must, of course, be reflected in every new sketch.

The future is rooted in the past: the original 911 is the blueprint against which not only every subsequent generation of the 911 must be measured, but also every other model range.

From a low-slung sports car to a high-riding off-roader: with the Cayenne, Porsche broke new ground. And the designers had already shown in their sketches how they interpreted the ‘S’ in ‘Sports Utility Vehicle’.

550 Spyder, 718, 914 – when the idea for a new mid-engined sports car for series production was first conceived in the nineties, the right DNA was certainly already there.

Even though the rear-mounted engine is regarded as an unmistakable hallmark of a Porsche, it all began with a mid-engine layout in the 356 ‘No. 1’ Roadster. That was in 1948. Just under half a century later, this concept is being revived. Even the very first sketches show the direction the brand would take from 1996 onwards with the Boxster and from 2005 onwards with the Cayman.

rampstyle #38 Just for the Plot

In our culture, we glorify optimization. Everything is supposed to be plannable and as risk-free as possible. And yet, at the same time, there is a growing longing for the detour. For the unplanned. For the real. “Just for the plot” means: I know this may not be the most sensible thing to do. But it tells my story better than reason ever could. Because people remember summers. Journeys. Encounters. That one evening that changed everything. The plot is the story we tell later. Not the Excel spreadsheet we keep today. Find out more
