Italian Car Design Icons: The Lamborghini 400 GT 2+2

This light blue Lamborghini is a real beautiful GT. There seems to be some disharmony between the front- and the back-design of this classic , but this unique composing makes the car outstanding and very special. And for me with my view through the lens there are so many beautiful details on this 400 GT 2+2, that I really appreciate this wonderful Italian classic. One of my favorite details of are the door handles , they are a piece of art.

But not only this feature is unique, the design of the engine cover and the whole front end is so complex with the soft curves, which are surrounding the double front lights. Simply outstanding. It shows the passion and the love of creating fine details of this period of Italian car culture. I think in the 1950ths and 1960ths, the designers gave more attention to little details; as Charles Eames once said: „style is the sum of details“.

The Lamborghini 400 GT was the successor of the 350 GT and was built 273 times between 1966 and 1968. The first issue of the 400 GT called Interim was most similar to the 350 GT with the lower body of the 350 and an engine of the 400 GT. The here shown 400 GT 2+2 was presented at the Geneva Auto Salon in 1966 and had a few modifications especially to create more space for the passengers. The front windshield was mounted a bit forward, the back screen was a bit smaller and the roof columns were a bit more slim. The larger body shape enabled the +2 seating to be installed in the rear, where the 350 GT only had room for luggage or the rarely selected option of +1 seating.

The coachwork of the Lamborghini 400 GT was designed and build by the Carrozzeria Touring Milano but after their bankruptcy in 1967 the cars were built at Marazzi located in Caronno Pertusella in the Lombardy area.

The engine of the 400 GT grew to 3929 cc and the 12 cylinder with four overhead cams-craft had a power output of 320 hp and a maximum speed of 260 km/h. The three Lamborghini’s, the 350 GT, the 400 GT Interim and the 400 GT 2+2 shared the same wheelbase with 2550 mm.

The factory tire equipment from the factory had been Pirelli Cinturato 205 VR 15.

An interesting story besides the pure facts of this car is that the Automobili Lamborghini pays tribute to the Beatles in October 2022 with a special tour through London from Abbey Road Studios to Savile Row on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the first single „Love me do“ recorded on October 5th in 1962 in the Abbey Road Studio. The Beatles recorded virtually their entire output at Abbey Road, including “Love Me Do”, and when they performed live for the very last time on the roof of their Savile Row Apple Corps headquarters on January 30, 1969, a Lamborghini 400 GT 2+2, red with black interior, was parked on the street below. The car is visible in director Peter Jackson’s recent award-winning Beatles documentary, Get Back. All four members of the Beatles were great car enthusiasts, not only the pink (!!!) painted Rolls Royce of John Lennon, and it is supposed that Paul McCartney owned a Lamborghini 400 GT 2+2 at the time when the legendary White Album was recorded, but there is no documentation on this.
