He was also renowned as one of the most flamboyant characters in Formula 1 in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, and his vast collection of T-shirts is legendary among motor racing enthusiasts.
Murray did not set out to collect T-shirts, but simply bought one whenever he went to a gig or visited a new country in the course of his extensive travels during Formula 1 seasons. Over time those shirts amassed into an extraordinary collection of over 1000 items, many of them celebrating the greatest names in music history.

Gordon Murray is one of the world’s most renowned automotive and motorsport engineers.
Murray spent 20 years as a Formula 1 technical director, his cars winning multiple races and world championships. He went on to establish McLaren Cars to build the F1 road car, still widely regarded as the greatest supercar ever made.
He founded his own company in 2007 and in May 2019 was appointed Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for his contributions to motorsport and the automotive industry.
In 2019, Murray collaborated with Philip Porter on One Formula, a two-volume blockbuster covering in detail every one of his 70+ designs, including those that were never built.
