The history of international sports car racing is full of privateers who set out to challenge the major manufacturers – a particularly difficult task in the high-tech world of 21st-century motorsport. One company prepared to take it on was Oxford-based Creation Autosportif, which was founded in 2003 and made its name in GT racing before moving into Le Mans Prototypes with a Reynard-based DBA 03S.

New regulations for 2007 meant that Creation commissioned former Reynard engineer Kieron Salter to design an all-new car, and the resultant CA07 was powered by a 5.5-litre Judd V10 engine driving through a six-speed sequential Ricardo gearbox.

Only one car was raced in 2007, but two more were built that winter ahead of the following season. Both featured a revised Judd engine that offered a lower centre of gravity thanks to its 90-degree ‘vee’ angle – the development work having been funded by Japanese company AIM.

The car being offered here is chassis 002 and first appeared at the test day ahead of the 2008 Le Mans 24 Hours. It then made its race debut two weeks later in the main event, when it was entrusted to Johnny Mowlem, Stuart Hall and Marc Goossens – three highly experienced and talented drivers.

Having qualified 21st, they had a frustrating race in which they were delayed first by a broken rear-wing support, then by Mowlem going off at Indianapolis corner due to a puncture. They nonetheless made it to the finish, taking the chequered flag in 24th place overall and 11th in the LMP1 class.

Chassis 002 continued its European season by finishing eighth in the Nürburgring 1000km and a superb sixth in the Silverstone 1000km. On both occasions, the car was shared by Hall and Jamie Campbell-Walter, and Autosport magazine praised their ‘reliable run’ at Silverstone, where they finished on the same lap as the third-placed Pescarolo.

The Creation then headed across the Atlantic to compete in the last two rounds of the American Le Mans Series. First up was the flagship Petit Le Mans race at Road Atlanta, where Campbell-Walter was joined in ‘002’ by Stephen Simpson and endurance-racing specialist Harold Primat. Their run was halted by gearbox failure, but better was to come at the season-closing Laguna Seca race, where Simpson, Campbell-Walter and Liz Halliday finished fourth in the LMP1 class.

The final frontline period outing for ‘009’ came in the 2009 Le Mans 24 Hours. Running on Dunlop tyres rather than Michelins, and now powered by a narrow-angle Judd V10 in place of the wide-angle engine, it was once more driven by Campbell-Walter. He was joined by Vanina Ickx – daughter of six-times Le Mans winner Jacky – and Romain Ianetta, and the car again reached the finish of the French classic in 24th place.

After being acquired by a new owner in 2015, ‘002’ was comprehensively rebuilt by LMP-era specialist BBM Sport. The Creation then returned to the track for a shakedown test and two Masters Endurance Legends races – one of which came at the 2018 Imola Motor Legend Festival, where it claimed overall victory.

In 2025, Stuart Hall was reunited with ‘002’ at Silverstone and said that the Creations were ‘wonderful cars, super-fast… and they sound really nice.’

With the rise in popularity of LMP machinery from the 2000s and its acceptance onto the historic-racing scene, this Creation CA07 is a very competitive car that’s eligible for a number of prestigious events, including Le Mans Classic Legend and the Classic 24 Hours at Daytona.
