1972 Chevron B21

History:

‍Chassis #12 was delivered in 1972 as a B21 rolling chassis to Siffert Racing. It was purchased by Clemens Schickentanz from Germany (Schickentanz who had previously won the first 24 hours of the Nurburgring race with Hans Stuck in a BMW) installed a BMW Schnitzer engine. The car debuted in the Interserie Race at the Nurburgring on September 24, 1972 (see Autosport28.9.72, page 13), sponsored by “Dahl-Kanal”, finishing 9th overall in two heats. Then again in Hockenheim on October 1st, 1972, finishing 18thoverall in two heats. Schickentanz had a great racing career in other cars. He went on to win the 1973 European GT Championship witha Porsche RSR.

In 1973, the Chevron was returned to the factory to be updated to B23 specification, incompliance with the 1973 rules (for example, rear wheels had to be covered to the center of the wheel). From this point forward, the car was officially listed in the CHEVRON records as a B23.

Later in 1973, the car was purchased by Mr. G. Moritz in South Germany. Mr. Moritz received a German Wagenpass in May 1974, which officially declared the car as a B23 from 1973 with the BMW Schnitzer engine. The car first raced in Mainz Finthen, West Germany, in June 1974.

During the 1970s, a 3-liter Porsche engine with a Hewland FG400 gearbox was installed. Exact data for this change is unknown but documented in the Wagenpass. Mr. Moritz stopped racing in 1978, though the car continued competing in Germany under other drivers until 1982. Moritz retained ownership without an engine or gearbox until selling it to C. Schausberger (Germany) in 1994.

Restoration began in 1994 to full B23 specifications with a BMW M12 engine. The FIA papers, based on the Wagenpass dated May 1974, were stamped on March 13, 1995. The car returned to the NĂĽrburgring in early 1995 and competed regularly in International Supersports races through 1998.

‍The car was then sold to M. Sinclair (New Zealand), where it raced extensively from 2000 until 2006. It was subsequently sold to K. Wilkins in England, where it underwent another restoration by Mike Catlow.

In 2009, the current owner purchased the car and has since maintained it at Sonoma Raceway in Northern California, where it remains today. Between 2010 and 2016, the car raced annually in the Monterey Historic Races. It also competed in the SVRA COTA event in September 2013 and the Sonoma Vintage Races in 2013 and 2014.

During this time, the original BMW M12 engine was rebuilt, and a second engine was purchased from Dave Vegher at Veloce Motors West. A new body was installed in 2014 (due to age, not damage). The car continues to be meticulously maintained within its original specifications.

Condition:

Meticulously maintained by Phil Denny’s PRD Engineering Race Shop at Sonoma Raceway for the past 15 years. Engine rebuild by Dave Vegher Veloce Motors. Excellent race prep records for suspension, brakes, shocks, gear box and all work needed to keep the car in front runner and in top order.

Documents:
