During 1971, Lotus experimented in Formula One with a turbine-powered racing car, the Type 56B. Pratt & Whitney supplied the engine that had recently been banned from American Championship racing and Colin Chapman was keen to step in with a Formula One version.

This photo clearly shows the one-piece cover and the futuristic technology underneath. However, the results were rather modest. Eighteenth place on the grid and eighth place at the finish, one lap behind the winner.
