History
Chassis No 2 was first raced at the Monaco GP by ex Ferrari driver Michele Alboreto, this was the car’s first event and Alboreto Qualified the car 12th and finished 5th scoring 2 valuable World championship points for Tyrrell.
The car was designated as Alboreto’s race car at the following Mexican GP where Alboreto qualified an impressive 7th and finished a more impressive 3rd (with 4th fastest race lap) behind Senna’s McLaren Honda and the Williams Renault of Patrese.
At the US GP at Phoenix, Alboreto qualified the car 9th fastest but suffered gearbox failure on lap 17 which resulted in a DNF.
The Canadian GP saw Alboreto qualify 20th, but an electrical fault in the heavy rain caused the car to stop on the first lap. However team mate Jonathan Palmer set the fastest lap of the race in the sister car.
For the following French Grand Prix at Paul Ricard, Michele Alboreto was replaced in the team by French F3000 ace Jean Alesi. Alesi qualified 16th but was spectacular in the race immediately running in the top 10 before running as high as 2nd before his pitstop and finishing an impressive 4th on his debut.
Alesi was retained for the Silverstone race where he qualified 22nd but spun into retirement on lap 28 of the race. At the following German GP at Hockenheim Alesi impressed again by qualifying the Tyrrell 10th on one of the most power critical circuits of the season, in the race he finished a creditable 10th despite not having quite the same bhp as some of his rivals.
An 11th place qualifying result and 9th in the race was Alesi’s reward for effort in the Hungarian GP.
At the Belgian GP, Alesi was unavailable as he had a clashing F3000 race which took priority as he was leading the championship. Ken Tyrrell put the recovering Johnny Herbert (who was still recovering from his leg injuries sustained the year before) into chassis 2 where he qualified 16th but spun into retirement on lap 3. However at the following Italian GP Alesi was back driving chassis 2 and after qualifying 10th had a strong race to finish in the points again with 5th.
Johnny Herbert was back in the car for Estoril and the Portuguese GP as Alesi was racing in F3000 again. Herbert missed the GP as he failed to qualify by the smallest of margins – less than 200’ths of a second.
The final appearance in the 1989 World Championship for chassis 2 was at the Spanish GP, where Alesi qualified the car an encouraging 9th before taking the start in chassis 5 where he finished another impressive 4th at the demanding Jerez circuit.
For 1990 Tyrrell opted to use the 018 cars for the first fly-away races of the year, and Chassis 2 was used by Satoru Nakajima at both the US and Brazilian Grand Prix.
At Phoenix (round 1 of the 1990 season) Nakajima qualified 11th and scored a 6th place finish to cap a memorable weekend for the Tyrrell team where Alesi had started taking an impressive 4th in qualifying and a second place finish after leading the first half of the race after re-passing Senna for the lead.
