Traditionally one of the last events of the historic motor racing season in continental Europe is the Spa Six Hours weekend by roadbook.be. The location is the tremendous Spa Francorchamps circuit in the Belgian Ardennes.
The name giving main race is the Six Hours Endurance Race on Saturday, started at 16.00h and last in the darkness at 22.00h for GT and Touring cars like Ford GT40, Shelby Cobra, Jaguar E-Type Lightweight, Ford Falcon and Mustang, Porsche 911 and many more.
But there are also other races like the FIA Masters series with the Masters Legends Formula One, the Masters Sports Cars Legends, the Masters Endurance Legends, the Masters Gentleman Drivers, the Historic Grand Prix Car Association, the Historic Formula Junior, the Pre War Sports Cars and the Belcar Historic Cup and last but not least the Woodcote – Stirling Moss Trophy.
The last event of the historic motor racing season
The Spa Six Hours is in my opinion the most prestigious meeting of several hundred historic racing cars that compete on the famous Spa-Francorchamps track. A real 3-day spectacle with thrilling races, including the mythical Six Hours endurance race, permanent entertainment in the paddocks and numerous activities that will fascinate young and old, curious and passionate. And this event was perfectly organized by Roadbook, as it was every year.
This year the weather wasn’t that good, in the past years I often witness very warm temperatures and sunshine the whole weekend, this year there was a lot of rain on Saturday and Sunday. But nevertheless the unstable weather conditions makes it difficult for the teams and drivers to make the wright decisions. And for me as a photographer it is always a challenge to deal with the rain, keeping the equipment as dry as possible, but shoot the cool moments of spreading water behind the cars.
The Spa Six Hours event gives an atmosphere of the golden era of motor racing of the 1960’s, the 1970’s and the 1980’s and on top the experience of the younger Le Mans history with the Masters Endurance Legends like Peugot 908, Lola Aston DBR1-2, Lola LMP1, Ligier LMP2, Ligier JS P3, Lola B12/60, Audi R8 GT3 LMS Ultra, Lotus Evora GTE, Porsche 997 GT3, Ferrari 458 GTE, Dallara Oreca DO-05 and a Zytek 09S. These cars were of course the fastest of the weekend, sometimes struggling with the rain. But the sound and the speed are fascinating.
