Lap one of the under-1500 semi main was amazing – Bob Drake, who started from the tail end , had expertly driven the Cooper through the entire pack and was a scant 5.75 seconds behind the flying Weiss! Pictured here are Dusty Miller in the 150S Maserati ; Russell May in a Porsche Special #27 and the yellow Reno Racing Team Cooper Climax driven by Harry Banta. Banta’s Cooper wasn’t performing too well – it was learned later that the first and second gears were “kaput” – he finished eighth.

Miller finished sixth overall after his beautiful Maserati sustained its fourth dented fender on lap 23 when he spun out and hit the hay bales. He was probably still a little shook up from practice Saturday when his car went out of control and hit a photographer. The photographer received a broken leg but no other injuries.
