In June 2014 McLaren announced that they would produce a GT3 version of the new 650S to
contest the GT3 Championships from 2015.
Changes from the road specification included a new 6 speed sequential motorsport gearbox, 380
ventilated brake discs with six piston callipers at the front and four piston units at the rear, 52mm
wider track, revised suspension geometry and upgraded components. Externally it is distinguishable
from the road car with larger carbon fibre air-intakes & splitter and a new rear wing. It uses the same
500PS (368kW – 493bhp) 3.8 McLaren twin turbo V8 engine the previous GT3 12C but has a new ECU
to improve boost mapping and gearshifts. The power output is lower than the road going 650S due
to the FIA’s Balance of Performance regulations limiting air restrictor diameter and boost level.
