InterClassics Maastricht January 2022

The 28th edition of InterClassics Maastricht in MECC Maastricht has been postponed to January 2022. The show is traditionally the first event of the season on the old timer calendar, and was originally planned from 14 to 17 January 2021. However, due to covid-19, the show was postponed to the last weekend in June and has now finally been delayed until 13 to 16 January 2022.

Erik Panis, exhibition manager InterClassics: “Everyone in our sector can’t wait for things to look forward to and the opportunity to meet again in person. Despite the hope on the horizon, we have decided, after careful consideration with our sponsors, partners and participants, that June is just a little too soon. Of course, we have explored different options and are also seeing the emergence of very creative initiatives in the events sector allowing events to be safely organised. One thing’s for sure, meeting each other ‘live’ at the show, shaking each other’s hand, discussing and touching that beautiful car, drinking a beer, the smell of rubber, and all the rest; that’s the reason why we organise a show like InterClassics Maastricht! Such interaction is too limited with the present corona measures, and would detract from the quality of the show. Also the health and safety of our participants, visitors and colleagues is our priority, and cannot be entirely guaranteed in June. So, plenty of reasons to postpone the show until January 2022.”

Site of MECC Maastricht

As well as being the location where the annual InterClassics Maastricht is held, MECC Maastricht is also the organiser of the old-timer show. Since February this year, the North Hall of MECC Maastricht has been turned into a GGD vaccination centre with twelve vaccination stations. In total these can manage up to 2,000 vaccinations a day. If InterClassics Maastricht were held in June, the vaccination centre in MECC Maastricht would be put out of action for two weeks. This is part of the reason why we have decided to postpone InterClassics Maastricht until January next year. Rob van de Wiel, managing director at MECC Maastricht: “We are proud that we can contribute to combatting corona by facilitating the vaccination campaign. This increases the chance of attending exhibitions, events and congresses, and that’s what we’re all looking forward to!”

Dutch Grand Prix Classics – the cars, the legends

In January 2022, InterClassics Maastricht will focus on ‘Dutch Grand Prix Classics’. The last official F1 car race at Zandvoort Circuit was held on 25 August 1985. 2020 should have been the grand year of the Dutch Grand Prix, and the entire Formula 1 world was looking forward to it. The covid-19 pandemic dashed all hopes of holding the F1 race on Dutch soil last year. On the calendar of the International Autosport Federation (FIA) and Formula One Management (FOM), the first rescheduled edition of the Formula 1 Heineken Dutch Grand Prix is planned from 3 to 5 September 2021. During the show in January, InterClassics remembers the ‘Dutch Grand Prix Classics, the cars & the legends’ and, in collaboration with HARC, various museums and private collectors, will present a unique collection of F1 cars from the historic days of Zandvoort Circuit.
