In 1960, the newly titled East African Safari Rally travelled through three countries in East Africa, namely Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, and was 5,310 km long. Only standard road cars like this Ford Zodiac were allowed to take part as the event was intended to show how reliable they were.

Bill Young and his co-driver Colin McNaughton reached the finish in fifteenth place and, as you can see, at a roadside service the engine occasionally needed extra cooling with a bucket of water.
