In 1979, the Safari Rally was still run on open roads which meant that the competitors occasionally met oncoming traffic as Walter Röhrl did in the Taita Hills with his Abarth 131 Rally.

The Fiat lost its windscreen and the driver’s door was badly damaged, but there was no time for service or repairs. A local motorcyclist lent Röhrl his full-face helmet which gave Röhrl protection and kept the fresh air out of his eyes.
Motorsport Classic 2024 Calendar
The McKlein Motorsport Classic calendar evokes the great years of motor racing and rallying with names like Monza and Monaco, Spa-Francorchamps and the Safari Rally and those of drivers like John Surtees, Niki Lauda, Walter Röhrl, Bruce McLaren and Phil Hill. This unique wall decoration shows sports cars and formula racers as well as legendary rally cars and touring cars, in short, practically the whole range of motorsport from the middle of the Twentieth Century. As always, there is a mini-story about each picture, and there are a total of twenty-five photographs in an attractive format of sixty-seven by forty-eight centimetres.
