Theon Design today reveals its fastest, most involving and exhilarating Porsche 911 (964)-based project to date: the lightweight, ultra-focused R. Building on the success of the Oxfordshire based firm’s existing Coupe and Targa models, the flagship Theon R takes analogue performance and driving pleasure to unseen levels.
Inspired by the rich tradition of special lightweight Porsche road cars, the R further distils Theon Design’s signature recipe, sympathetically enhancing and relentlessly honing the 964 platform to deliver the purest, most exhilarating air-cooled Porsche driving experience imaginable.
Thanks to an extensive programme of weight saving measures, including the use of F1-grade carbon for all body panels, the R weighs in at under 1000kg, and is powered by Theon Design’s most advanced powertrain yet: a spine tingling, high-revving 500bhp+ 4.0-litre flat six motor which drives the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission.
Optimised for fast road and occasional track use, performance is in bona fide modern day supercar territory, with a superior power-to-weight ratio than even the latest 992 GT3 RS, all in a wonderfully interactive, resolutely analogue package.
Adam Hawley, Theon Design co-founder, commented: “We’re excited to reveal our latest enhanced 911 based project to the world, the embodiment of Theon Design’s ongoing pursuit of air-cooled Porsche perfection. With the Theon R we’ve set out to create a model that honours Stuttgart’s most special, low volume models – past and present. We’ve looked to everything from the 911 S/T of the 1970s – the inspiration for the original Theon Design prototype – to the iconic 3.2 Carrera Clubsport, 964 RS Clubsport and 993 RS Clubsport, as well as the 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0 and modern day GT3 and GT4 models.
“We’ve drawn on all our learnings from our Coupe and Targa commissions, delivering the Theon take on the ultimate, lightweight air-cooled 911 road car. The R combines thrilling, useable performance, with razor-sharp handling, a car that is optimised for the street but just at home on the track. Thanks to the low kerb weight, we’ve been able to deliver a driving experience defined by a clarity which really sets it apart; it’s special and rewarding at any speed. It’s the ultimate expression of Theon’s OEM-grade design and engineering expertise – the sum of nearly a decade’s worth of obsessive honing of the Porsche 964 platform.”
