The Motorsport Scrapbook (19)

Created in 1963 by Bruce McLaren, the race team that bore his name won its first grand prix in 1968, a victory that promised a bright future. Bruce had ensured he employed people who shared his ethos of hard work, enthusiasm and total dedication to the sport but his vision came under serious threat when, in 1970, he lost his life while testing one of his Can-Am sports cars. The team regrouped and took the decision to continue Bruce’s legacy but the 1971 season must have been difficult.

Initially the teams other driver, Denny Hulme, carried on alone and thanks to his dedication, McLaren Cars evolved into one of the world’s leading race teams and automobile constructor. The first Formula 1 race in 1971 was held at Brands in March, the non-championship Race of Champions that gave the grand prix teams a chance to evaluate their cars for the forthcoming world championship. The McLaren team arrived with its latest DFV-powered M19A for Denny Hulme. It is seen here in the paddock being prepared for practice with team manager Teddy Mayer standing on the right, wearing his McLaren team jacket. Denny qualified the car in second place, beaten only by Jackie Stewart’s Tyrrell. The promise of a podium finish evaporated when, just over the half-way point in the race, the car retired with engine problems.
