Ferrari, Ferrari, Ferrari! Trends come and go but Ferrari remains timeless, again landing top spot amid the Monterey auctions. With eight of the top 10 sales, the marque continues to remain popular despite changing tastes.

- Total sales increased to $432.8M, the highest since the record set in 2022
- Ten new world records were set for Ferrari models, and the number of $1M+ sales for post-1990 Ferraris is knocking on the door of vintage Enzo-era Ferraris (12 vs. 15, respectively)
- A Ferrari Daytona SP3 sold for charity went for an impressive $26M
- Some modern supercar highlights include: a 2008 Koenigsegg CCXR that sold at auction in 2015 for $825K now sells for $3.2M. A 1993 Ferrari F40 LM sold for $11M, setting a new world record for the LM model by almost double. A 1995 Ferrari F50 sold for $9.25M, setting a new world record for the model.
- Variety arrived in the $1M+ segment (Ferrari Dino 246s, Porsche 911s, BMW M1s, etc.)
- Top 10 sales covered seven decades, demonstrating broad collecting variety, though eight of the top 10 were Ferraris.
With sales totaling $432.8M across four days and five auction companies, 2025 was the second-biggest Monterey ever, only surpassed by 2022’s $471.2M. However, it should be noted that the top sale was a 2025 Ferrari Daytona SP3 at $26M, which was auctioned off for charity. Without this lot, the total sales of $397.2 would have been up only4% from last year.
As has been the story over the past couple of years, modern supercars set records while bidders shied away from vintage Ferraris, the Pablo Picassos of the collector car world. Last year’s faltering of the vintage Ferrari market, with a drop from an average of 84% (2021-23) to 51% in 2024, was soothed by 65% of them selling this year. More buyers and sellers found a meeting point, but the frenzied Italian interest has moved to more modern cars.
Overall, the collector car market appears to be operating at a vehicle level rather than the mass exuberance seen during the pandemic boom. Buyers fight over what they really want and leave behind what they don’t. Bidders clamored over several supercars that rarely come up for sale and largely ignored more common vehicles. A 2000 Lamborghini Diablo GT, of which only 80 were made and only a handful have been sold publicly, set a record at $1,435,000. Similarly, with only 50 or fewer built and almost never appearing at auction, both a 2005 Maserati MC12 and a 2010 Ferrari 599XX Evo broke records for their models at $5,202,500 and $3,305,000, respectively.
By comparison, the Mercedes-Benz 190SL is a high-dollar car commonly sold at auctions, but five examples sold for an average of 21% below their low estimate. It also appeared that bidders were no longer interested in picking up a new restoration project. A never-restored 1934 Bugatti Type 57 Ventoux with its original body and engine, sold for $224K only 16 months after it sold for $427K—a 53% loss. Similarly, a just-out-of-long-term storage 1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GT sold for 26% below its condition #4 (fair) value.
Variety percolated up into the $1M level. A 1974 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS, 1980 BMW M1 Procar, and a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring all sold for more than $1M. Also, a 1996 Nissan Skyline GT-R Nismo 400R just missed crossing that mark by $5000. These are in addition to the Duesenbergs, 300SLs, Cobras, and the numerous Ferraris that typically sell for $1M+.
The top 10 sales this year spanned a wider range of decades than at any Monterey in at least 10 years. At the same time, it had the fewest variety of marques represented. This is because Ferraris completely dominated the top 10. Even if you were to exclude the Daytona SP3 charity lot, a Maserati MC12, which is based on a Ferrari Enzo, would take the 10th spot.
With the Monterey auctions now in the rearview mirror and the next big auctions not until January, the market will have some time to digest the results. Variety has moved up into the seven-figure range, but the records and headlines are still being dominated by Ferrari.
