Since the track dried quickly, this proved to be the right decision and, after all the drivers came into the pits to change tyres at the end of the first lap, he took the lead in his McLaren M23-Ford. But the race was stopped on lap two after Niki Lauda’s accident when he crashed and was engulfed in a fireball in his Ferrari 312 T2.
