The 24-hour race at Spa was part of the European Touring Car Championship in 1971, so that Ford, BMW and Alfa Romeo simply had to compete there. The unanswered question was whether their cars would be able to cover the distance, as they had not been designed for such long races.

The Ford Capri RS2600 bearing number 22, driven by Dieter Glemser and Alex Soler-Roig, managed to do that and won the race by a margin of three laps to a Mercedes 300 SEL entered by AMG.
