RM Sotheby’s is thrilled to add another auction night to their Monterey schedule, featuring a private collection of machines curated for the thrill of driving. From gated Ferraris to an incredible grouping of Aston Martins, a 300 SL Roadster, and a Carrera GT, a diverse collection of unique driving machines will be sold with no reserve on Thursday, 15 August, at RM Sotheby’s annual Monterey Car Week sale.
When someone collects cars, the motivations can be as diverse and unique as the vehicles themselves. It might be a passion passed down through generations, an appreciation for automotive artistry, or simply the exhilarating joy of driving. Imagine a collection where, when you open the garage door, you’re greeted by gated manuals, screaming V12s, track-ready supercars, and classics like the Mercedes 300 SL—with each car being a ticket to a different driving experience.
Enter a collection designed for the true enthusiast. This is not just a compilation of cars, but a celebration of the experience of driving. Spanning 56 years, from 1951 to 2007, the collection features 47 cars from 18 different makes. Whether you’re drawn to the thrill of a high-performance beast or the luxury of a plush sedan, this grouping offers an incredibly diverse array of options, embodying what cars are truly meant for—to be driven.
The Gated Ferraris:
It’s no surprise that gated manual Ferraris have always been desirable and arguably some of the most enjoyable Ferraris to drive. However, what we didn’t anticipate was that these gated Ferraris would transcend being merely highly enjoyable Italian supercars and become some of the most sought-after variations in the market. This collection doesn’t feature just one; it boasts a remarkable assortment of gated Ferraris. Enthusiasts, rejoice.
2007 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano – Ferrari is unlikely to ever build a car like this again. It is one of only 30 six-speed manual transmission examples produced, with just 20 delivered to North America. This 599 GTB is considered one of the best in the world, shows just under 1,680 miles, and has just two recorded owners from new. Presented in the stellar color combination of Blu Mirabeau over Grigio leather, it represents an opportunity not to be missed by a serious tifoso (Estimate: $750,000 – $950,000).
1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetta – This extremely well-preserved and overwhelmingly original late-production example displayed just 4,367 miles at the time of cataloguing and is believed to retain most of the original factory-appointed Argento Metallizzato paint and Nero leather interior. Carefully stored and undriven during the first 21 years of original ownership, this authentic and minimally used Daytona retains its full matching-numbers engine, and offers potential for display in preservation-class at concours d’elegance (Estimate: $750,000 – $950,000).
2005 Ferrari Superamerica – Equipped with a coveted six-speed gated manual gearbox, this example displayed 6,551 miles at cataloguing and is factory-equipped with matching Scuderia Ferrari fender shields. Combining the potent drivetrain of the 575M Maranello with a revolutionary advancement in open-air motoring, the Superamerica is a formidable sports car for all occasions and climates (Estimate: $575,000 – $700,000).
2001 Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pininfarina – Ferrari’s stylish drop-top 550, designed to honor Pininfarina’s 70th anniversary and one of only 127 US-market examples of this limited-production model, this example was driven just 3,432 miles from new. The 550 Barchetta Pininfarina makes for a highly attractive purchase for any collector car enthusiast, especially when presented in a timelessly appealing color configuration such as the example offered here (Estimate: $400,000 – $500,000).
2003 Ferrari 575M Maranello – Fitted with a suite of desirable factory options including carbon interior trim and the ‘Fiorano’ handling package, this example displayed fewer than 10,000 miles on the odometer at time of cataloguing. It is a stellar and rare example of Ferrari’s highly regarded V-12 grand tourer featuring the iconic gated shifter (Estimate: $350,000 – $400,000).
1999 Ferrari 550 Maranello – This active, low-mileage example of Ferrari’s return to front engine V-12 grand tourers displayed just 4,874 miles at the time of cataloguing and provides a special experience no new car can match. Finished in NART 523 over tan leather trim, this example boasts a highly desirable gated six-speed manual gearbox (Estimate: $200,000 – $250,000).
2005 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti – Finished in the attractive shade of Blu Tour de France, this example is one of 199 equipped with the six-speed manual gearbox from the factory. This car offers modern performance along with an unparalleled sense of driving involvement and, the 612 Scaglietti marked the final four-seater model Ferrari offered with a manual transmission, making it seemingly the perfect vehicle for tifosi to enjoy the finer points of V-12 Ferrari ownership and grand touring (Estimate: $200,000 – $250,000).
1999 Ferrari 456M GT – Finished in the dramatic shade of Rosso Barchetta, this example is one of just 640 manual-transmission examples produced between 1998 and 2004 and is desirably equipped with a gated six-speed manual transmission (Estimate: $100,000 – $150,000).
1995 Ferrari 456 GT – Finished in the magnificent shade of Nero Tropicale, this example is powered by a 5.5-liter V-12 engine backed by a six-speed gated manual transmission and offers a wonderful driving experience (Estimate: $100,000 – $125,000).
The Aston Martins:
1965 Aston Martin DB5 Convertible – Presented in Dark Blue over Parchment leather upholstery with matching convertible top, this DB5 is one of only 39 left-hand-drive examples produced and is powered by its numbers-matching 4.0-liter straight-six engine. Wonderfully equipped with air conditioning, chrome wire wheels, power windows, Blaupunkt radio, and triple SU carburetors, it is accompanied by a BMIHT Certificate which documents its original specifications and is an extremely rare example of the Aston Martin flagship in its most desirable open-air form (Estimate: $1,300,000 – $1,600,000).
1962 Aston Martin DB4 ‘SS Engine’ Series IV – Presented in its factory-correct color scheme of Midnight Blue over White Gold upholstery, it is one of only 97 left-hand-drive examples fitted with the uprated, 266-hp Special Series engine and retains its numbers-matching engine. Fantastically equipped by the factory with Overdrive, Powr Lok limited-slip differential, electric windows, chrome wire wheels, Motorola radio, oil cooler, Dunlop disc brakes, and triple SU HD8 carburetors, this DB4 is documented with the build sheet copy and BMIHT certificate (Estimate: $475,000 – $650,000).
1965 Aston Martin DB5 Vantage Coupe – One of only 21 Vantage-powered saloons configured in left-hand drive, this example retains its matching-numbers Vantage engine; mated to a five-speed manual gearbox and benefits from prior restoration in the classic color scheme of Silver Birch over black. It would make a benchmark addition to any sports car collection (Estimate: $1,000,000 – $1,400,000).

One of only two designed to a highly bespoke specification, it boasts a long-term known history with noted enthusiasts and collectors. Featured in Automobile Quarterly, this exceptional vehicle is also a three-time award-winner at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance (Estimate: $1,300,000 – $1,600,000).
The Ultimate Driving Machines:
1963 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster – Hyper advanced for its time and known as one of the ultimate driving machines, it’s no surprise this collection houses a 300 SL Roadster. It was the fastest production car of its era, combining incredible handling with a design that continues to age gracefully. This 300 SL is a testament to timeless automotive excellence. It is an extremely late and incredibly desirable “disc brake, alloy block” example representing the apogee of this iconic model’s technological development, the seventh-to-last 300 SL Roadster produced, and presented in Fire Engine Red over Natural leather with matching soft top (Estimate: $1,600,000 – $1,800,000).
2005 Porsche Carrera GT – Among the most significant supercars of its era, with stunning motorsport-derived performance and exquisite design, this Carrera GT displayed fewer than 5,855 miles at time of cataloguing, and is one of only 644 US-market examples produced.
