The 1961 French Grand Prix took place on the very fast Reims circuit and was a slipstream race. The strain of that fast running in hot weather caused many drivers to retire early thanks to engine failure. Ferrari brought three 156s for its regular drivers, but also a privately entered car for Giancarlo Baghetti.

Until shortly before the finish, Baghetti battled with Dan Gurney’s Porsche for the win and ultimately won his first Grand Prix. The nose of his 156 shows clear signs of slipstream racing.
