From September 26th to 29th, it was time once again: HK-Engineering invited guests to the traditional Autumn Rally at the beautiful Lake Maggiore. This exclusive event attracted around twenty proud owners of Mercedes 300 SLs, along with several drivers of 3.5-liter convertibles and other Mercedes models, to the picturesque region of northern Italy. Despite high expectations for Italy’s typically sunny weather, the start of the journey was marked by an unexpected storm. Participants were greeted by torrential rain upon arrival, though the excitement for the upcoming days remained undiminished.
By the time the rally officially kicked off on Friday, the weather had turned around, with glorious sunshine accompanying participants on their drive through the enchanting scenery of Bella Italia. It was the perfect setting for an event that seamlessly blended elegance, culture, and automotive luxury.
The participants stayed at the historic Regina Palace Hotel in Stresa, a magnificent establishment dating back to the Belle Époque. The hotel’s grand ambiance provided the ideal backdrop for the vintage cars and their owners, transporting them back to a golden era of luxury travel.
Throughout the rally, driving excursions alternated with boat trips, giving participants the chance to fully appreciate the scenic beauty of Lake Maggiore and the smaller, yet equally charming, Lake Orta. Luxurious boats whisked the group around the islands and shores of these idyllic waters, offering a highlight that showcased the unique charm of the region.
A truly exceptional moment of the rally was when participants drove their vintage cars right onto the marketplace of the town of Orta San Giulio. Normally closed to vehicles, the rally participants were granted a special exception, parking their priceless cars in the heart of the historic square, surrounded by quaint buildings and an unforgettable atmosphere. It was a rare and memorable experience not only for the drivers but for onlookers as well.
Another highlight was the spectacular drive up Mottarone, the highest mountain in the region. The winding roads rewarded participants with breathtaking views of the surrounding lakes, which appeared especially stunning in the clear autumn air. The panoramic vistas over Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta, nestled among the rolling hills and majestic mountains of northern Italy, offered a majestic sight, creating unforgettable moments.
