Introduced in early winter 2012, the SLS AMG Black Series represented the most extreme, track-focused version of the road-going SLS lineup. Uncompromising in performance and presence, it pushed the limits of AMG’s engineering. It stood as the rawest, most exhilarating interpretation of the modern Gullwing—a true motorsport machine built for the road.
Power came from an enhanced M159 6.3-liter naturally aspirated V8, now producing 631 horsepower thanks to a higher redline of 8,000 rpm, a revised valve train, new intake routing, and retuned engine management. A shorter final-drive ratio amplified its response, cutting the zero-to–60 mph time to just 3.6 seconds. Lightweight construction played a crucial role. A titanium AMG sports exhaust, lithium-ion battery, and extensive use of carbon fiber—including the hood, rear bulkhead, and torque tube—cut weight significantly. Even the AMG seven-speed dual-clutch transmission was repositioned to lower the center of gravity.
Handling was honed with a stiffer suspension setup, wider front and rear tracks, and new wheel carriers. The car wore lightweight 10-spoke AMG forged wheels with specially developed Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires—275/35ZR19 front and 325/30ZR20 rear. A firmer AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension, recalibrated speed-sensitive steering, and an electronically controlled limited-slip differential delivered sharper dynamics. Braking was handled by a standard AMG carbon-ceramic system designed for high endurance.
Visually, the Black Series stood apart with flared fenders, a deeper front apron, a carbon rear diffuser, side skirts, darkened headlamps, and “Black Series” badging. The interior echoed the car’s focused intent. Alcantara and designo leather were featured in Black, Red, or a two-tone Black and Red theme. Standard AMG sport bucket seats saved 33 pounds, while a carbon center console and removal of the COMAND infotainment system shaved another 13. Buyers could option COMAND and a 1,000-watt Bang & Olufsen audio system with 11 speakers.
The accompanying window sticker shows that this particular Black Series was finished in optional Imola Grey with the striking two-tone Black and Red interior when new. Additionally, the car was optioned with COMMAND, the Bang & Olufsen sound system, and staggered 19 front and 20-inch rear Black Series forged alloy wheels finished in Black. The accompanying clean CARFAX shows the car was sold new by Mercedes Benz of Greenwich, Connecticut, on 29 January 2014 and stayed with its original for over seven years. When the second Florida-based owner purchased the car in August 2021, it covered just 1,170 miles and remained in spectacular condition.
As presented today, this SLS remains in near-new car condition, having covered just 1,506 miles at the time of cataloging. It is furnished with its original window sticker, books, battery tender, two keys, and a clean CARFAX Vehicle History Report. Truly capturing the spirit of the original 300 SL Gullwing as a raw, uncompromising race car for the road, the SLS Black Series is the exhilarating modern interpretation of just that. As a result, well-presented examples like this with extremely low mileage remain a coveted choice amongst collectors and enthusiasts alike and would be the perfect car to have next to a 300 SL.
