1st Palm Springs National Championship Road Races

Some 20.000 fans turned out into the splashing sunshine to see the first Palm Springs SCCA National Championship races at the local airport. It was the last National meet of 1956 – and one that long will be remembered for it had everything: top drivers and races, flamboyant Scuderias and a long whirl of glittering social soirees that left everyone with just enough vitality to take place in the day’s terrific finale.

1st Palm Springs National Championship Road Races

Action a-plenty earmarked this weekend which brought weather to cheer motelkeepers’ hearts. No matter whether one visited the bistros, dining spots, liquid refreshment stores,
private parties or what-have-you, it were warm days , cool nights, there was clear air and no wind. Saturdays program included a Concours d’Elegance at the Desert Inn
(won as usual by Phill Hills Pierce Arrow), practice on the course and 5-lap sprint races to determine starting positions for the longer events on Sunday.

You might think this gorgeous shot of spectators could habe been taken at any race, but looking closely, you can see some of them holding the program for this venue.
