A product of two pioneering Formula 1 World Championship-winning marques and two renowned motorcycle engineers, the ultimate Cooper Monaco sports racing car is stunningly beautiful and unique. When quietly ambitious former Douglas development engineer and pre-war racer CT ‘Tommy’ Atkins switched his attention to four wheels, promoting his High Efficiency Motors garage business in Chessington, he quickly became a leading private entrant, fielding fastidiously built and meticulously prepared single-seaters and sportscars for Roy Salvadori.

HEM’s chief mechanic Harry Pearce enveloped this T61M chassis, supplied in kit form by the artisan Cooper Car Company in nearby Surbiton, a five-litre, 430bhp, quad-cam Maserati V8 engine from the Modena concern’s 1962 Tipo 151 Le Mans GT project and a Colotti T37 transaxle within a wonderfully sleek aluminium body for the 1964 season. With F1 pegged at 1500cc, the sheer speed of large-capacity sportscars wowed spectators.

Unpainted on its debut in the BRDC’s International Trophy support race at Silverstone in May, Salvadori finished a class-winning second. Next time out, in Atkins’ glorious metallic green livery, with a red noseband reflecting the car’s Italian heritage, the combo won the Whitsun Trophy at Goodwood. Third in the GP d’Europe-supporting Guards Trophy race at Brands Hatch was its other period result.

Fully sorted by the vendor with leading specialists over 15 years, and offered with current HTP, fresh engine – plus road-going spare and useful provisions – this awesome machine boasts impeccable provenance and is a passport to the world’s best Historic racing events – including Goodwood’s Revival – and concours. An unmissable opportunity for Maserati ‘tifosi’ or aspiring Trident-bearers to be only its fifth subsequent custodian in 60 years.
