The Chevrolet Corvette has long been an exceptional platform for grassroots racing, with privateers taking them from showroom floors straight to the track since its inception.

Such is the case with this 1963 Corvette Stingray “Split-Window” Coupe, which boasts period and contemporary racing provenance on both ends of the Atlantic. Chassis number 30837S114119 began life as a road-going Stingray finished in Sebring Silver over a Red interior equipped with the optional L76 340-horsepower engine. It was gifted new to Stockton, California resident Bruce Benninger by his father as a reward for graduating dental college. The Corvette initially served as Benninger’s daily driver, but motorsport called to him, and Benninger converted his Stingray Coupe to race specification in 1968.

Initially competing in the SCCA National Sports Car Championship B Production Class, Benninger raced his Corvette at hill climbs and autocross events across the state, notably finishing second at the 1972 SCCA Virginia City Hill Climb and giving the Stingray its first taste of racing glory. During this time, Benninger also began to put tire to tarmac at some of the West Coast’s best racetracks, debuting in the Solo 1 event at Ontario Speedway in 1971. After graduating from the SCCA Driver’s School in June 1972, Benninger quickly made a name for himself; he won the 1972 Willow Springs National and raced the Vette at Riverside, Portland Raceway in Oregon, and at Laguna Seca an impressive 14 times. Benninger continued racing his Corvette at a national level throughout the 1970s, scoring several top-four finishes and a class win at the SCCA National Trans Am round at Portland Raceway in 1979. The Corvette’s North American racing career concluded in fitting fashion in 1981, last competing at the final Solo 1 event at Sears Point.

After 25 years of ownership, Benninger sold the car in August 1989 to a Mr. M. Yarney, who exported the racing Corvette to England that October. It was then sold to Jeff Barley in 1994, and a new chapter of the Corvette’s competitive epic began. Barley overhauled the Stingray’s aging components in 1995, rebuilding the transmission and differential through Andy Robinson Race Cars and various other parts through Rare Performance Motors. He raced the car at several prestigious tracks in England including Brands Hatch and Donington Park, before storing the Corvette for several years.

In 1998, the Goodwood Revival burst onto the stage quickly taking the crown of Europe’s definitive vintage racing event—and with it came the next era of the Stingray’s racing odyssey. Barley first entered the car in the 2001 meeting in the esteemed RAC Tourist Trophy Celebration—clad in a red and white livery and prepared for John Young and Gerry Marshall. It raced at the Revival again two years later, securing a highly respectable top ten finish. It has been driven by a who’s who of motorsport personalities such as Peter Brock, John Fitzpatrick, Martin Donnelly, and Stuart Graham and has been a regular invitee at the Goodwood Revival and Members’ Meeting as well as an eligible entry for a host of other top historic events.

The Corvette has since been owned by a handful of fellow historic racing enthusiasts who have continued to use the Split-Window ‘Vette as its original owner did. This group includes by its current owner—2014 British GT Champion Marco Attard, who acquired the car in 2015. Recently, with preparation from Damax and a Steve Warrior engine, Attard has regularly raced the car at Goodwood and other events with Sir Chris Hoy, the legendary and highly decorated Olympic cyclist, 24 Hours of Le Mans racer, and all-around sportsman. The Corvette last took part in the 2025 Goodwood Revival, again competing in the prestigious RAC Tourist Trophy with Attard and Touring Car star, Josh Cook at the wheel.

Broad Arrow Privates Sales is pleased to announce this well-documented and well-raced 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Coupe, fresh from its latest outing at Goodwood is now available for immediate acquisition. The racer has been returned to its original Sebring Silver specification and is offered with a spare Steve Warrior engine, its MSA Historical Technical Passport, Automotive Competition Committee for the US (AACUS) FIA homologation certificate, its SCCA Vehicle Logbook and receipts for the extensive preparation the car has enjoyed. A welcome entry to many the world’s most prestigious historic racing events, this 1963 Corvette Stingray remains a highly competitive racer with up-to-minute Goodwood Revival provenance and a sure-fire ticket to the starting grid where American muscle continues to prove its mettle against Europe’s finest.
