Offered here is an exceptionally original example of Mercedes-Benz’s legendary 300 SL Roadster, representing one of just 263 cars produced in 1962 with the desirable combination of disc brakes and cast-iron engine block before the transition to alloy beginning with chassis number 003049. While the later alloy engines offered slightly reduced weight, they proved potentially more problematic in service, suffering from cylinder corrosion issues that required complete engine replacements along with low oil pressure when driven hard. Therefore, this 300 SL Roadster, hailing from the final year of cast iron block production, represents the most coveted iteration of the W198 series. In fact, the alloy block was only introduced because the tooling for the cast iron production was worn out and necessitated replacement.

According to a copy of its Mercedes-Benz Data Card, chassis number 002999 left the factory finished in a sophisticated triple-black configuration featuring Lackierung Schwarz (Black paint – 040), Leder Schwarz (Black leather – 201), Verdeckstoff Schwarz (Black soft top), as well as an optional Coupé-Dach (hard top) finished in Black. In fact, it is one of just 165 300 SL Roadsters finished in Black, and one of only two disc brake, cast iron block cars finished in triple black with a hardtop.

Also equipped with a Becker Mexico radio (341) and White Wall tires (641), the car boasts an unbroken and well-documented ownership history from new. Originally delivered to John Beeler of Los Angeles, California, the car later passed to Robert Clarke of Newport Beach in 1977. Robert Clark and subsequently Carolyne Clark would remain its caretakers for a remarkable 39 years. Extensive documentation is on file from the Clark’s ownership including numerous original Mercedes Benz North Hollywood service records. The car was sold in 2016 by Carolyne Clark to the previous owner, after which the car found its way to its fourth and current owner in 2022.

The car presents today in wonderfully preserved, unrestored condition, maintaining an unrivaled degree of originality throughout. The original cast iron engine block exhibits December 1960 casting marks, while the engine’s serial number stamping remains intact and matches factory documentation. The original differential housing remains in place, with its factory-stamped numbers preserved.

The gearbox also retains its original casting marks and correct serial number. The chassis and suspension components showcase the same outstanding degree of originality. The front axle carriers and steering box maintain their original numbers from dispatch. The factory-installed disc brake system remains intact, with original booster and master cylinder housings, though wear items have been serviced as needed over the years. Chris Kramer’s inspection report is on file thoroughly documenting all the identifying numbers throughout.

Remarkably, the body retains the majority original Black finish, while showing some age-appropriate patina and historical repairs—a remarkable feat for a 62-year-old vehicle. Likewise, all appropriate chrome and trim pieces remain on the car, with some areas showing patina and minor pitting. The cabin retains its original Black leather upholstery, and while the carpet and driver’s seat show some age-appropriate wear, the rubber mats and dashboard covering also remain original. All electrical components, including the factory-installed Becker Mexico radio, are present and functional. The windows retain their original rubber seals, which exhibit some cracking.

The car’s originality and fully matching-numbers status is further validated by a history report from Mercedes-Benz Classic dated June 2016, and a thorough inspection conducted by Chris Kramer in May 2022, which confirm chassis 002999 as perhaps the most original 300 SL Roadster extant. At the time of the latter report, Kramer noted that the car was in need of a major mechanical service prior to being driven. Subsequently, under current ownership, the car was entrusted to marque specialist Mark Allin at Rare Drive from 2022-2023 for a no-expense-spared mechanical overhaul which included a complete wiring harness replacement, engine rebuild, and thorough running gear inspection and preservation. The extensive work is documented by invoices spanning 90 pages and totaling over $312,000, demonstrating the current owner’s commitment to preserving this significant Roadster.

This 300 SL represents an unrepeatable opportunity to acquire an unrestored, matching-numbers example of what many consider to be the most developed expression of the W198 series from the final year of cast iron block production. It’s remarkable preservation and documented four-owner history make it arguably the most significant 300 SL Roadster in existence—ideal for preservation classes at distinguished concours events the world over. Accompanying items and documentation include its original owner’s manual and parts catalog, tool roll, previous registration and service papers, its Mercedes-Benz Classic Center report, and a copy of its factory Data Card.
