A very rare an authentic Jaguar D-Type (XKD 551) with continuous history. The revised matching number engine comes with the car. A rare opportunity to acquire an original D-Type with “no stories”

On 12 July 1956, the car was dispatched on loan to Henlys, Piccadilly in London, where it was presumably used for display. By 21 November 1956, it was back at Jaguar where it was part of the stock of unsold D-types (Robson Jaguar D-type p.130). It was subsequently sold to Coombs of Guildford and invoiced on the 22 May 1957. In October 1957, Coombs sold it to G Sportoletti Baduel of London who used it as a road car.

It was modified by removing the central member between the seats, fitting a passenger door, a full-width windscreen which Andrew Whyte thought was most likely a rear screen from a saloon car, and a passenger headrest fairing (Whyte Jaguar … from 1954 pp.569-70). It was registered ULU 336 (issued in London in 1957) and Baduel kept it until at least 1961.

In July 1963, the car was bought by the Hon James Dawnay (Autocar, June 1979) and in 1966 it was advertised for sale by Paul Hawkins. Later owners included Colin Crabbe whose dealership Antique Automobiles Ltd advertised it in Motor Sport, August 1968. In 1969, David Hoskison and his brother bought the car from Paul Vestey. They used it at various events, including the 1970 British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch, where Pedro Rodriguez rode in the car, and the celebrations for 21 years of the XK engine, as shown by a plaque on the dashboard.

In 1971, the car was advertised in Autosport without much response. Dentist Rupert Glydon bought it and a Ford GT40 for ÂŁ16,000 (letter from MH Hoskinson in Jaguar World, March/April 1993, p.18). Coopers Metals owned the car which at some time they re-registered 77 EWV, an age-related mark issued in Wiltshire in approximately 1975 (Autocar, June 1979). The car was advertised in Jaguar Journal, Winter 1976, p.48, and a sale was negotiated through Nigel Clarkson Ltd. Peter Agg owned the car in 1979 (Autocar, June 1979). During the 1970s, the car had been returned to its original D-type shape with a tail fin.

In 1984, it was sold to Klaus Werner (D) via Coys auction, and in 1991 sold to Mr. R. Pferdmenges (D). It was then advertised for sale by Klaus Werner of “Klassische Automobile GmbH” in 1994 and sold to the actual Swiss collector who owns the car since over 30 years.

With over thirty years of experience in classic motorsport, race preparation, trackside support, restoration, engine and drive train rebuilds Graber Sportgarage caters for a select clientele of classic sports car owners from around the globe. The origins of "Carrosserie Graber" date back to 1925 when Hermann Graber started as an independent coachbuilder in Wichtrach near Berne. In 1929 a Panhard-Levassor bodied by Graber won first place at the St. Moritz concours d`elegace, wich gave Graber well deserved and valuable publicity. In the 1930`s Graber became world famous for beautiful convertible & coupés designs and creations as well as for his perfect craftmanship. Until his passing in 1970 Hermann Graber had designed and built over 800 bodies on chassis ranging from Alvis, Aston Martin, Bentley, Bugatti, Duesenberg, Lagonda, Packard, Rolls-Royce to Rover and others. With Hermann Graber`s demise the coachbuilding activity was discontinued, but the mechanical workshop and body shop were carried on by his widow until 1980. From 1980 to 1996 the Graber company was one of a few hand-picked official Ferrari dealers in Switzerland. Futhermore the company was very active in the field of complete restorations of Italian and German sports cars. In 2001 Graber Sportgarage merged with "Oldtimer Reparatur AG" the workshop of Markus Scharnhorst and moved all activities to a bigger and more suitable location in Toffen, near Berne. The main workshop, the showroom as well the head offices are still located in Toffen until today. In 2014 the company opened a second showroom located in the shopping area in Lyssach near Burgdorf in order to get greater exposure of its classic cars it has on sale. In April 2019 the company is happy to have expanded into second, more modern workshop complete with offices and showroom in nearby Münsingen. The new branch will service and repair some of our customer`s classic race cars but will mainly focus on services, repairs and sales of Ferraris of the more recent eras.
