Your entry ticket to the centenary edition of the Mille Miglia may not yet be on paper, but this Healey could make it possible.
This Healey Silverstone competed in the Mille Miglia every year from 2006 through 2012. The car knows the route, understands the bustle of Brescia, and has more than enough experience. Naturally, participation in the 2027 anniversary edition will still depend on passing the official selection process. This Healey Silverstone appears on the list of models eligible to apply, and the organizers have confirmed that 2027 will mark the centenary of the Mille Miglia. The right car is therefore already here. All that remains is your application.
The Healey Silverstone was built as a sports car for both public roads and the racetrack. It was a light, compact machine that you could drive to a race on Saturday, compete in, and then simply drive home again afterward.
The aluminum bodywork was designed by Len Hodges and mounted on a steel chassis. A total of just 105 Silverstones were built: 51 examples of the early D-series and only 54 of the later E-series. This 1950 example belongs to that final group. The E-series received a wider chassis, providing slightly more room than its predecessor.
Under the hood is the 2,443 cc “Big Four” engine. This four-cylinder unit features two camshafts mounted high in the engine block, short pushrods, and twin SU carburetors. In Silverstone specification, output was quoted at approximately 104 horsepower. Combined with a low curb weight of 940 kilograms and an open body in which the wind, the engine, and the road are in constant conversation with you, this makes for a highly capable automobile. The engine was also positioned farther back in the chassis than in earlier Healey models. This improved weight distribution and suited the Silverstone’s original purpose perfectly: to create a small sports car that was light, direct, and exceptionally effective in competition.
This Healey was first sold in 1950 and competed at Goodwood in the late 1950s. It later went on to complete an impressive series of Mille Miglia appearances. This is therefore not a car whose sporting history exists only in a sales brochure. That is where the real appeal lies.
In summary: a 1950 Healey Silverstone E-Type, one of only 54 examples built, retaining its original engine, with extensive Mille Miglia experience and presented in fantastic condition.
The 2027 centenary edition is drawing ever closer. And with this Healey, beginning your preparations early would hardly feel like a chore.
