Greenwich Concours Confirms: Coach-Built Cars Are Back!

The Greenwich Concours d’Elegance is one of the historic car-culture highlights here on the East Coast. As with many events of this caliber, the romance of custom and coach built cars is properly celebrated.

Greenwich Concours Confirms: Coach-Built Cars Are Back!

Meet the American who sells them to you.

Hagerty, who took this event over a few years back, in their effort to make everything “vintage-car” bigger and younger (not a bad thing if you consider that the next generation has to be properly nurtured into this most wholesome of passions) brings more and more “contemporary” cars onto the show-field. Naturally those motorcars tend to be on the spectacular, one-off or hyper-car category.

An event that does its best to span a century of rolling sculptures is of course the place to run into Nat Mundy, who’s enthusiasm, when it comes to automobiles, seems to span an equal stretch of time.

Car-culture-wise Nat Mundy is a real renaissance man. His knowledge of cars is broad, modern and classic and he worked so many angles of the car culture business that he has a real understanding of what is hot and what is not.

Nat’ bio covers everything from running the largest indoor cart track in the North-East to racing the Carrera Panamericana, to consulting multiple race tracks (Lime Rock Park as well as Monticello) while always buying and selling cool cars on the side.

He rebuilt a Porsche engine in the bathroom of his dorm in college and when the dean discovered it, he let him continue to not curb his entrepreneurial enthusiasm. Because above all, Nat is a terrific business man. Not because he talks the talk but because he walks the walk. I know very few people who say what they do and then do what they say. Nat is properly self-made and therefore authentic. He can talk to anybody with sincerity.

And this quality is what got him pulled into the job (for which he did not apply) of being the sole sales representative and official, exclusive dealer of the envious super and hyper car marque of Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus. Now technically this I where the story could end and we did discussed and wrote about it already here: collectorscarworld.com/nat-mundy-glickenhaus

SCG 004

…But sometimes one’s skills are not fully utilized. SCG (Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus) is a fairly young company and while its founder and visionary James Glickenhaus puts serious funds into building a factory, his cars are not pumped out by the dozens, as of yet. But Nat knows how to sell them by the dozens so naturally he pretty quickly ran out of product. In the process he made contact and sometimes friends with the sort of affluent car-enthusiasts that are willing to spring high six figures – sometimes seven – to own and drive a really fully bespoke, hand built, thorough-bread super or hyper car. And if you are the sort of person who has the passion and the means to own one of these, before you know it, you want to own another.

And from this customer demand Nat sniffed out who else is doing a “Glickenhaus,” meaning; who else is building bespoke sports cars at a very high level while taking inspiration from the timeless icons of the past and/or racing history. And who knew; once you start looking, you can find a whole bunch.

Today HK Motorcars, the company that Nat represents, and whose chief marketing and sales director he is, can be called the first American car dealer that exclusively sales coach built motorcars. And with that the circle closes as to how it all started, back a full century ago. In those days you could for example order a rolling chassis and engine from Rolls-Royce and then send it to Mulliner (or sent an Alfa Romeo to Figoni or an Aston Martin to Bertone) to have its “clothes” made entirely custom – where you spec every detail yourself down to the makeup-mirror, together with the artisan craftsmen, who will then build your car by hand.

If you don’t want to just buy a car but rather have one made, talk to Nat at HK Motorcars. He’ll set you up. And watch this video to properly get into the mood: vimeo.com/954187868/c496683e06
