EXCEPTIONAL PROVENANCE IN KNOKKE-HEIST
With only 1,400 examples produced and widely recognized for its significant place in automotive history, every Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing Coupe is extremely collectible in its own right. Yet occasionally, one comes along in such remarkable original condition and with documentation so thorough that it is propelled to the next level. Elegantly finished in medium green with plaid seat inserts, this matching-numbers example is offered with comprehensive history, including two original logbooks documenting the car’s mileage back to 1968.
The last rear-wheel-drive car to win the World Rally Championship, taking the 1983 manufacturers’ title against the all-conquering Audi Quattro, the Lancia Rally 037 has more than earned its place among rally’s defining competition machines. Nearly four decades later, a team of seasoned rally veterans set out to reimagine it for the modern era, crafting the Kimera EVO37.
At the turn of the Millenium, BMW ruled the performance sedan class with the E39 M5, such that Ferdinand Piëch—then Volkswagen Group’s Chairman of the Board—decided to explore a Volkswagen rival. To do this, he looked to the VR-engine, already familiar in six-cylinder form, but he expanded it to become the W10, a 5.0-liter powerhouse delivering 473 horsepower and 592 Nm of torque. Then he put the engine into this BMW M5, an incredibly unique prototype featuring an engine that would go on to form the basis, not of a performance sedan, but of the W16 that would power the Bugatti Veyron.
