The only original Lancia D23 Spyder Pininfarina remaining on display at 26th edition of InterClassics Maastricht.
Faithful to tradition, for four days in January, Maastricht will be the place to be during InterClassics Maastricht, the Benelux’s biggest classic car show for more than 25 years running. The most exclusive classic cars will be on display and even for sale during the event. The Italian brand Lancia will be in the spotlights during the 26th edition of InterClassics Maastricht. The highlights from the rich, more than 100-year history of the brand will be presented in cooperation with the Lancia Club of the Netherlands and Belgium and various museums. This includes the only original Lancia D23 Spyder Pininfarina remaining which is being made available for the event by the Louwman Museum. 300 exhibitors will also be showing the most beautiful classic cars representing all the famous car brands along with all the related products for these classic cars, from spare parts to memorabilia. Buyers and fans will be able to indulge their passion for the classics during InterClassics Maastricht from 10 through 13 January 2019 at MECC Maastricht.
Lancia D23 Spyder Pininfarina
The ambitious Gianni Lancia, son of founder Vincenzo and director after his father’s death in 1937, believed that Lancia had to prove itself in the racing world. He developed a racing programme in cooperation with the now 60-year-old builder Vittorio Jano, previously at Alfa Romeo. After the war, Gianni built a racer based on the new Aurelia GT, the D20 coupé. Lancia won in the Targa Florio, but the cars failed miserably at Le Mans. Lancia decided to make technical modifications to two D20s, sawing off the roofs to create an open racer. This became the Lancia D23. Later, another two D20s were rebuilt and fitted with a De Dion rear axle, a vast improvement to the car’s handling.
Even during its début at the Monza Grand Prix, this Lancia D23 Spyder Pininfarina came in second place thanks to the skills of driver Felice Bonetto. For the arduous Carrera Panamericana race in Mexico, Lancia took on the challenge with five cars: two D23s, one for Bracco and a second for Castellotti, as well as three new D24s for Fangio, Bonetto and Taruffi. During the fourth leg, Bonetto was involved in a fatal crash, casting a shadow over Lancia’s ultimate 1-2-3 victory: Fangio took first place, Taruffi second and Castellotti third in his D23. Bracco had to retire from the race because of a broken rear wheel. The colour blue is unique for an Italian race car, and the car made its début at Monza in 1953 flaunting this colour. This is the only original 1953 Lancia D23 remaining which is being made available by the Louwman Museum and will be on display at the theme square during InterClassics Maastricht. An illustration of this Lancia D23 Spyder Pininfarina forms the characteristic theme logo for InterClassics Maastricht 2019. A total of 25 unique Lancias will be on display, including the 1938 Lancia Astura Pininfarina, the 1992 Lancia Delta HF Integrale Martini 5 and the 1956 Lancia Aurelia B24 Spider.
InterClassics Maastricht will be held from Thursday, 10 through Sunday, 13 January 2019 at MECC Maastricht. The classic car trade exhibition traditionally attracts many buyers and enthusiasts. With 35,000 m2 of exhibition floor space for 300 exhibitors and more than 800 classic cars on display, InterClassics Maastricht is the largest classic-car event in the Benelux.
