State-of-the-art super sports cars with a long-standing tradition: Mercedes- Benz SLR special show at RETRO CLASSICS® BAVARIA 2019.
SLR – three letters that stand for “sporty, lightweight and race-ready” – and which have an almost hypnotic effect on fans of high-performance super sports cars. The Mercedes-Benz SLR, of which a limited number of just 2157 vehicles were crafted by hand at the start of the millennium, is still considered the most exclusive production vehicle of the Swabian global brand today. To mark the 15th anniversary of the official production start in Woking in England, RETRO CLASSICS® BAVARIA is joining forces with Autohaus Löhlein in Wendelstein and the Mercedes-Benz SLR Club to host an SLR special show with top-class vehicles (Hall 3A, Stand 210).
Inspiration for the “Silver Arrows of the 21st Century” was the legendary “Uhlenhaut Coupé” from 1955 – a two-seater designed by head of passenger car testing and race car development, Rudolf Uhlenhaut, and based on the 300 SLR racing car. Uhlenhaut’s “fast touring car” was the prototype for a concept study at the end of the 1990s, combining style elements of the 1950s with state-of-the-art Formula 1 technology. Realising the “SLR vision” was to take some time, though, with the SLR McLaren finally unveiled during IAA 2003. At the end of March 2004, the first customers received their vehicles.
Altogether, there were five versions of the new SLR available. The SLR 722 GT, one of the few vehicles to be converted to a race car, will be on display at RETRO CLASSICS® BAVARIA, along with the limited edition SLR 722 S of which only 150 were built. This car was named after the start number with which Stirling Moss and Dennis Jenkinson won the Mille Miglia in 1955. Sir Stirling Moss was also the inspiration behind naming the last, extremely limited special edition SLR Stirling Moss. Presented in 2009, it had neither roof nor windscreen, yet boasted more than 650 horsepower which saw the extraordinary vehicle accelerate to 100 kilometres per hour in just 3.6 seconds.
