Zell am See, 17th October 2018 – A legend is back. From 1937 to 1974, the Ice Race in Zell am See was a mixture of breakneck skijoring and action-packed car races on a frozen lake and the runways of nearby Alpen Airport. The relaunch named GP Ice Race will bring back all the spectacle on 19th and 20th January 2019. Rally cars of today will fight for victory, historic racing cars can be admired as well as the ancient sport of skijoring. In short: The fans can savour exciting motorsport and amusing entertainment. GP Ice Race Ambassador Hans-Joachim Stuck promises: “The legend lives on, we are offering a weekend of down-to-earth motorsport.”
In the beginning there was a vision: Nuremberg born Vinzenz Greger and Ferdinand Porsche from Zell am See, both co-founders of Greger Porsche Classic Cars, had the idea for the comeback of a legendary event. “For forty years between 1937 and 1974 fans enjoyed spectacular car races on ice and skijoring in Zell am See. With a modern interpretation we want to bring back this legendary event from its decades long slumber,” explains Vinzenz Greger.
When they speak of “modern interpretation”, Vinzenz Greger and Ferdinand Porsche are thinking of a weekend packed with motorsports. Race and rally cars of today will go head to head in different competitions. Historic motorsport cars will not only be shown on static displays, but will do demo runs as well – all together up close and personal for the fans.
“We will not issue VIP tickets to pits and paddock for privileged guests only. During our event every spectator will have the chance to get close to the action and the stars,” Hans-Joachim “Strietzel” Stuck promises. The former Formula 1 driver and touring car racing legend acts as ambassador for GP Ice Race in support of the organisers Vinzenz Greger and Ferdinand Porsche. “Motorsport belongs to Zell am See as the mountain roads and the passes do,” says Ferdinand Porsche. An enthusiasm, which was shared be the local Tourism Board Zell am See-Kaprun, which became the first premium partner of the GP Ice Race 2019.
The comeback of the once legendary event, organised under the name of GP Ice Race, will feature a lot of well-known elements. On the historic track on the old airfield amateur and professional drivers, teams and manufacturers will compete spectacularly in various categories. The ancient sport of skijoring and show runs by star drivers are on the two-day program as well.
A number of prominent drivers have already been named: Marc Lieb and Timo Bernhard, both FIA World Endurance Champions, have just confirmed their participation. Talks with further star drivers both from circuit and rally racing are ongoing. Find out more.
