RM Sotheby’s is delighted to announce the addition of two important sports racing cars to our biennial Villa Erba auction, taking place this 25 May during the revered Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este weekend. Joining the roster of 40 carefully curated cars is a 1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider and a 1957 Porsche 550A Spyder.
Chassis no. 0448 MD is the 12th of only 13 Pinin Farina Spiders produced, and one of only five with covered headlights, and quickly found success in Californian racing circles in the fifties. More recently this Mondial has returned home to Maranello, where it was inspected by Ferrari Classiche and granted red-book certification. With certification confirming original engine, gearbox, and bodywork, and eligibility for many historic racing and concours events, this is without doubt one of the finests 500 Mondials in existence. This 550A has both an impressive race pedigree and fascinating ownership. Raced extensively in period around the world, this was the only 550A Spyder delivered to Denmark, later enjoyed by owners from Kenya, Italy, and France. This Spyder has undergone a complete, body-off restoration by Porsche specialists, returning the car to its original configuration and livery. With its extensive racing history and fantastic condition, this Porsche is sure to be as sought-after as it is rare. For more information and photos visit our website in the coming weeks.
