Delivered new June 6, 1963 to John Barnes of Selsey, West Sussex England. The Elva was dark blue. Powered by a Ford engine mated to a Hewland gearbox. From 1963 to 1968, Barnes raced it primarily in hill climbs and sprints. In 1965, Barnes was the British Hillclimb Champion. Barnes amassed one of the winningest records of an Elva driver in history. From 1968-1985, the car stayed with Barnes and his widow as an original surviving Elva parked in his garage. It was sold to the second owner, Christopher Purchess in 1985.
Then in 1989, via Roger Dunbar of Elva Cars (historian and keeper of the marque), it is sold to Mark Leonard of La Jolla, Calif. It was then restored and upgraded to 7S specifications. In historic racing, the car was a winner once again, winning at Laguna Seca, including the 1991 Monterey Historics.
From 2007 until present, the car was owned by Dean Meiling and race prepared by Intrepid Racing. The Elva was raced in Europe and the United States. It has an enormous file of documents including original race records, period photos, Scrutineering Engineering stickers from John Barnes and period memorabilia.
Maintained by Intrepid Racing in Sparks, Nevada from 2007 to present with continuous race prep and rebuilds as necessary. 1600 Lotus Twin Cam engine rebuilt by Dave Vegher with six hours’ time. Recent rebuild on Hewland 5-speed gearbox. Full 7S specification with Girling AR brake calipers, 6” and 7” wheels and large radiators.
Raced in historic races in Europe and USA. Winning the Monterey Historics outright in class and many other successes. Large binder of documents from day one showing provenance.
