Contrary to the usual opinion, the construction and design of the 300 SL Roadster began before the delivery of the first coupes in October 1954. The first roadster prototypes for the presentation to the board of the Daimler-Benz AG were made in November 1955.

The development from coupe to the roadster presented the engineers with some problems. Open vehicles tend to be much heavier than their closed counterparts due to the design. Naturally, this leads to poorer driving performance which was not tolerable for that kind of car. Therefore, optimizing the weight while maintaining the stability was the biggest engineering challenge.

Today, both the Gullwing and the Roadster represent the height of German 1950s engineering and are highly regarded collectibles. For Hans Kleissl from 300 SL-expert HK-Engineering, "no sport car of the 50s still raises so much enthusiasm." Kleissl is currently preparing a book to honor the car's history.

Lean back and enjoy some of the best 300 SL Roadsters that are currently on the market, ideally with a glass of whisky or wine.
